Facemachine was inspired by the now indispensable phenomenon of the selfie. Our faces have become a symbol for the person we share on social media: an advertisement of who you are of who you want to be.

Fascinated by the omnipresence of the face, and the link between face and identity, Middendorp created a choreography specifically for the face. Immense projections of different dancers are projected on the floor, making it seem as if the dancers are dancing, rolling and walking across the changing faces.

A combination of faces and dancers is created, and in the interaction between them themes such as communication, publicity, power(lessness) and control are addressed. This sometimes leads to hilarious scenes, such as the large, projected face licking the body of a reclining dancer like a lollipop.

"This is a real crazy face machine!"
